Just remember the process: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down; and repeat.
Before your child can begin to practice division problems, they first need to understand the concept of division. Explain it to them by relating the idea of division to the idea of sharing. Help them conceptualize it by explaining how a number of items can be shared equally between groups, and give them examples.
Take the alternating sum of the digits in the number, read from left to right. If that is divisible by 11, so is the original number. So, for instance, 2728 has alternating sum of digits 2 – 7 + 2 – 8 = -11. Since -11 is divisible by 11, so is 2728.
Divisor | Divisibility condition |
---|---|
11 | If the number of digits is odd, subtract the first and last digit from the rest. The result must be divisible by 11. |
12 | It is divisible by 3 and by 4. |
Subtract the last digit from twice the rest. The result must be divisible by 12. |
Divide the number formed by the first remainder and the second number in the dividend by the divisor. The remainder is 3 and the second number of the dividend is 4, so the new number you’ll be working with is 34. Now, divide 34 by 5. 5 goes into 34 six times (5 x 6 =30) with a remainder of 4.
Using a calculator, if you typed in 13 divided by 3, you’d get 4.3333. You could also express 13/3 as a mixed fraction: 4 1/3.

Since 13 can only be divided evenly by 1 and 13 (itself), it is called a prime number. A prime number can only be divided evenly by one and itself. The other numbers such as 6, 12, and 21 are called composite numbers since they can have many factors (more than two).
You can quickly check whether 88 is divisible by 4 by looking at the last two digits of 88. In this case the last 2 digits are 88. We can see that 88 IS divisible by 4, which means that 88 is also divisible by 4.
