Challenge every word
And the more you re-write, the more you’ll stand out from every other entry in a creative writing competition. Find the best bits of your story and hone them to make them better. Change what’s around them to show them off. Find the weaker parts – cut them.
And there have been years that the prize for winning one contest more than covered the entry fees for the others I entered. So even though I’m not a big winner, I say yes — it’s worth the effort to try. Entering writing contests helps writers prepare to follow the rules. That’s good practice for a writing career.
Vocal Challenges represent a very lucrative opportunity, but because it’s a contest, you can’t depend on winning the prize. Still, an annual Vocal membership is inexpensive and it gives you the chance to sign up for a weekly writing lottery ticket with a good cash prize and reasonable odds of winning.
Contests are especially good for short form writing: short stories, creative essays, and poems. Short form contests do have their share of scammers, like the venerable poetry anthology scam, but a good percentage of short form contests are likely to be legit.
Participating in a writing contest is not only a good way to earn some cash for college, but also to be recognized for your talents. There are many different genres and types of contests available, so you can find one that fits your skill set.
An effective writer is able to distill complex thoughts and ideas into simple, clear language that’s quickly and easily understood by others. This valuable quality helps them tackle even the densest subject matter by breaking it down into uncomplicated pieces.
The Expository Style of Writing
An expository essay is a short written work that explains a topic or informs an audience. The expository style of writing is a good choice when you want to tell readers what you know about a topic or show readers how to do something.
Vocal is Not a Scam
I’ve made over $2k with Vocal in 5 months. Its nice side money but it is “freelance” which means promoting your own work. … If you promote your work you can make side money with Vocal but to call the site a scam because you do not understand it is unfair.
Vocal media pays you $3.8 per 1000 views. If you are a vocal member, then you will get $6 per 1000 views. as vocal+ subscription has many benefits. Vocal media pays you through stripe and minimum payout is of $35 for writer and $20 for vocal+ writer.
How Do You Make Money on Vocal Media? Writers make money on the platform through the views gained from readers ($3.80 per 1000 views; Vocal+ members get $6.00 per 1000 views). They can also receive additional monetary compensation from readers in the form of tips, and cash bonuses from the staff at Vocal Media.
Is it worth it? IMHO, individual poem contests aren’t worth the cost. There are any number of paying, viable publications that take individual poems and pay good money for them. Unless you’re trying to publish a book, writers get less out of these contests.
A legitimate contest will provide clear rules, including information about entry categories, deadlines, eligibility, format, fees, prizes and the circumstances in which they will or will not be awarded, judging, and (very important) any rights you may be surrendering. If you can’t find these, don’t enter.
