Though the standard is 32 pages, they can technically come in page lengths that are any multiples of 8: 16, 24, 32, 40 or 48 pages. They are reliant on both text and illustration and text length can range from 100–1000 words, sometimes more.
Young readers of 5 to 7 are usually starting out with what we sometimes call chapter books; these often feature black and white illustrations inside and will have fairly simple word choice and shorter sentences. A rough guideline to start with would be 5000-10,000 words per book.
According to the data, self-publishing sales follow a roughly exponential curve. A few do very well. However, 25% of self-published children’s books authors sell fewer than 100 books.

What’s the Best Font Size? Rather than the standard 11 or 12pt font for chapter books, a larger font should be used for kids’ books. When laying out your book, try using font sizes 16‑24pt. For the youngest age groups, a larger font is especially important, while older age groups can be smaller.
Since most children’s books contain colorful photos, we generally recommend using a coated 100# Gloss text paper for the inside of your book. Coated paper allows color images to print with more contrast, and gloss text is the most common paper we use for printing children’s books.
Using a book template, you’ll begin writing your book by typing your manuscript directly into your template. Once your book is written and ready for edits and production, the template will come in handy since it’ll already be in a common format and file for you to start the book production and publishing process.
If you’re self-publishing a children’s book, you’ll either want to hire a professional illustrator or do the illustrations yourself. If hiring a children’s book illustrator is not in your budget, keep in mind that it takes a lot of time to illustrate a children’s book.
There is also no need to describe the illustrations in your submission. If your manuscript doesn’t come to life visually without being explained, then it probably needs work. If the story needs to be told by the illustrations, then mention that briefly in your cover letter.
Hi-lo (high-interest, low readability) books are designed to engage struggling readers by exploring complex, age-appropriate themes at a lower reading level. They typically feature simple sentences, controlled vocabulary, lower page counts, and short chapters.
Know your market and age appropriateness. Know the market for contemporary children’s books. Look at what is on the shelves, what sells, what kids are engaging with. This doesn’t just extend to plot and character: think also about language, illustration (if required), format and covers.
Earnings for children’s novels can be higher, including possible royalties up to 10 percent versus up to 6 percent for picture books. As you write more books, you can have an ongoing income from royalties to help increase your earnings.
