Choosing the right resume format for a teacher depends on your level of experience. Stick with the chronological format if you have continuous teaching experience or opt for the functional format if you are newer to the education field. The hybrid option offers a balance of both.
If your resume is ugly, nonexistent, boring, or ancient, then I am here to help! After teaching resume writing to a group of seniors and revamping my own resume, I rounded up what I learned about creating standout resumes so I could share it with you.
What is a teacher resume summary? A teacher resume summary is a short paragraph that showcases educational achievements, classroom skills and past teaching experience. It may also be known as a teacher professional summary for resume or a teacher personal profile sample.
What that means is your years of relevant teaching experience will ultimately determine the length of your resume. If you have less than three or four years of teaching experience and no other work experience, the general rule is that you should only need one page.
Generally, your resume should go back no more than 10 to 15 years.
These out-standing teachers are Earnest, Funny, Firm, Enthusiastic, Consistent, they believe in Timeliness, are Open-minded and are inherently Researchers. These qualities aptly form the term “E F F E C T O R”, which I would define here as simply “one who creates a positive effect”.
Be sure to do the obvious… create a resume, write a basic cover letter that you can easily tweak as you apply to schools, type up your references with all of their info in one place, get your letters of recommendations together. If you don’t have letters of recommendation, be sure to ask for them now!
Here’s how to write an objective for a resume:
Start with a strong trait, add 2–3 skills, describe your professional goals, and say what you hope to do for the company. State the position to which you’re applying and use the name of the company. Keep it short. 2–3 sentences or 30–50 words is the sweet spot.
Example introduction letter
My name is Jennifer Brown, and I’ll be your child’s teacher for the upcoming school year! I am looking forward to getting to know you all and guiding your child through a successful third grade. First, allow me to share a little about myself.
It’s absolutely not essential, but a friendly, professional, smiling face is always lovely to see. When you are setting up your Teacher Horizons profile page you may wish to complete it by adding a professional profile photo.
Length – Limit your resume to one page (new teacher) or two pages (experienced teacher). Format – Choose a resume format (e.g. how you will arrange your information on the page) and be consistent throughout. Remember that those looking at your resume scan it quickly; they do not read it like the page of a book.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
You can choose to organize it by course level, by institution, or by area/field. Include the title of the course and the year(s) taught. Courses you TAed should be included in this section.
Most resumes should be two pages long. Two pages are the standard length in 2021 to fit all your keywords, work history, experience, and skills on your resume.
Sell Yourself
You need to bring that experience and enthusiasm alive for the interviewer. When they are making their final decision, you want to stand out. You can only do this if you show yourself in the best light and allow the interviewer to see your passion for teaching.
