In California, a child must be five years old BEFORE September 1 in order to enroll in kindergarten. Elementary school is kindergarten through 5th grade (ages 5-10), middle school is grades 6-8 (ages 11-13), and high school is grades 9-12 (ages 14-18).

Legally, the term child may refer to anyone below the age of majority or some other age limit. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child defines child as “a human being below the age of 18 years unless under the law applicable to the child, majority is attained earlier”.

At nine, children are still greatly influenced by their parents. Most 9-year-olds benefit from the freedom to exercise their growing independence but still seek emotional reassurance from their parents. Nine-year-old children may also be moody, and may be upset one minute and then fine the next.
The main academic goals for the third grade is the mastery of multiplication and division, cursive writing, the parts of speech and the composition of the formal paragraph. The development of responsibility, self reliance and independent work habits is a major focus of this grade level.
Second grade (also called grade two, corresponding to Year 3 in the United Kingdom) is a year of primary education in Canada and the United States. Second grade is the second grade of primary school. Children are usually aged 7–8 in this grade level.
Third-grade math expects students to know their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division fact families and use them in equations and two-step word problems. In addition, 3rd graders need to know how to: Read and write large numbers through the hundred thousands, knowing the place value for each digit.
