That’s because the purpose an author has for their writing is either to persuade, inform, or entertain: p-i-e. It is important for students to know the reason an author writes a text because it helps them understand what that text is about.

The PIE Model is consist of three stages as planning, implementation and evaluation (Figure 2).
You can help your students remember the reasons why authors write with this easy as PIE acronym: P is for Persuade – the author shares their opinion with the reader. I is for Inform – the author presents facts to the reader. E is for Entertain – the author amuses the reader.
A basic way to structure a paragraph is to use the P.I.E. method: Point, Illustration, Explanation. The Point is the main idea of the paragraph, to which everything in the paragraph relates. The Illustration is the specific fact or example that supports (illustrates) the Point.
P: Make a point. I: Illustrate the point with a quote or specific example from the text. E: Explain or elaborate on the point in the context of the illustration. PIE helps you place your thoughts (the point and the explanation) in the strongest parts of the paragraph—the beginning and end.
