In general: 1 sq ft of rug = 25 large (4.5″ pom poms), or 40 medium (2.5″ inch pom poms). 1 skein of medium weight acrylic yarn (160 yards) produces about 7 large 4.5″ pom poms and 11 medium 2.5″ pom poms. Therefore, you need about 4 skeins per square foot of rug.
Poms are all measured the same way – by the length and the width of their strands–for instance 6” (long) x 3/4” (wide) or 12” (long) x 3/16” wide and so on. Please see the illustrations below. With a baton handle as shown below, the strand is measured from inside the baton out to the edge of the strand.
Scrap cardboard – the thicker and stronger the better. Yarn – I’ve found the very thick, chunky yarn works great for the large sized pom poms and the finer yarn works best for the small size but there are no real rules here. Scissors – sharp scissors are a must for cutting and trimming.
Pull one rubber band through the cut ribbons until it reaches the center of the ribbons. Fold all the ribbons in half at that point. Wrap another rubber band at the fold to secure. Repeat Steps 1 through 3 to form another pom pom.
